Pregnancy comes with an armload of maladies. From the conception till the delivery, your body goes through a number of hormonal changes. This does not only influence physical changes but also the emotions. It is quite normal for pregnant women to go through moodiness and irritability. The ailments can, however, vary in intensity during different stages of pregnancy. Listed below are some of the most common ailments experienced by pregnant women.

Morning sickness

Nausea and vomiting are very common during the early stages of pregnancy. They, however, fade away after the first trimester. Many women experience it during certain fixed periods of the day while others may experience it throughout the day. Morning sickness is accompanied by dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. However, unlike the terms suggest, it can occur during any time of the day. This may be caused due to the body’s increased sensitivity towards certain food and smell.


Indigestion mainly occurs during the latter stages of pregnancy. The pregnant woman may suffer from heartburns, bloating, discomfort in the abdomen long with indigestion. Indigestion is caused due to the increase in the size of the uterus or the belly, which pushes the digestive juices back to the gullet, hence causing an irritation of the lining. It is also intensified by the changes in the hormonal levels. Taking antacids help to a certain degree, but it should only be taken as long as the doses are safe. It is best to consult the doctor before taking any medication during this period.


Constipation is also quite common among the pregnant women. Regulatory measures can be taken by controlling the diet. Increasing the amount of fiber and drinking lots of water is helpful for maintaining a healthy bowel movement. Medicines should be taken only if really needed. It is best to go for natural substitutes like bran or isabgul as against allopathic laxatives.


This occurs mainly when you take outside food.  Occasional diarrhea does not harm the health of the fetus or the mother. However, if it continues for a long period of time, it should be kept in a check as it can cause dehydration.

Cough and cold

Cough and cold are also very common as the body tends to lose immunity. Pregnant women should, therefore, maintain a healthy diet so as to boost the immunity. To ensure the safety of the fetus, stick to the medicines as prescribed by the doctor and refrain from taking painkillers.


During pregnancy, the body is taking up nutrition for two, therefore it has a higher tendency to get weaker, which should be complemented by taking enough nutrition. The body is also constantly gaining weight and changing in shape as well as size. This might result in muscular pain, especially in the thighs and back. At this point, it is best to go for natural remedies such as massages and acupuncture rather than taking painkillers.

Stretch marks

Stretch marks start showing up during the final stages of pregnancy. Applying oils and moisturizing creams could help to some degree. These could reduce to some degree after the delivery when the body starts getting back to the normal form. The lines thin away, but it could take some time for them to fully fade away.
